A Flight of Fantasy through a Dream (e)scape

(2021-2022)

In my final year of my undergraduate studies I analysed the film 'Brazil', directed by Terry Gilliam. The film takes place in a dystopian future in which the lifestyle of the citizens are assisted by technological advancements, yet most of the machinery fails to do its basic task. Sam’s Wings are mechanical and seems to be the only functioning piece of technology in the film. This could be due to the fact that the wings only appear in his dreams in order to become the hero in his own fantasy. Much of the film focuses on this dream like state. Similar to an architectural drawing the sheet is filled with a preconceived idea which may eventually become a physical reality. Like a dream the individual can imagine anything and convince themselves and others that the dream is reality.

The project is aimed at the Mystery Object group. The group of individuals meet up once a month at a Library where they look at one found object and are encouraged to make an artefact such as a poem, a story or a drawing. The architecture will enable these people to gather in a comfortable environment where they can make and create as much as they desire without constraints of working in an already existing space with its own function.

The structure will be in itself a re-enactment of the film, a dreamscape for these individuals as well as a place of lost and found mystery objects to be collected and archived. It will encapsulate a comforting manner comparable to the nature of a mother hen’s wing and also the collectable nature of a magpie's wing. The underpart of the wing holds its own space in which the chicks are able to gather underneath for warmth as well as providing a safe space for the objects to be collected and displayed in.
